Dr. Glory Van Scott's Birthday Party at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola

I was honored to be at Dr. Glory Van Scott's Birthday Party at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. She is a producer, performer, educator and civic artist. You can see her bio here. When she told me her birthday was on June 1st, I told her my birthday is July 1st, and she told me her mother's birthday is July 1st! Well, it's just something that made me happy personally. A lot of people were invited and came to the birthday party. Many of them were performers, musicians, artists, writers, art supporters, etc. The music performance was by Lew Tabackin (tenor sax), Howard Alden (guitar), Kenny Washington (drums), Ron Carter (bass), and of course, George Wein (piano). The music by these world-top level musicians was great without doubt, but what I would like to write about here is about the young performers Glory teaches; Dr. Glory's Youth Theater. You can get their information here. They have a great teacher and are taught about their culture and history, and how to bring them together into a beautiful form at such young age. I am a visual person, and I see kids playing instruments often but never really get a chance to see kids verbally challenging themselves, so it was really fresh & impressive to me. What was I doing when I was their age (around 15)? Yes, I was a pitcher of a softball team, I was studying at school, etc, but important things like about my own culture, relationship between my country and others, difference and similarities between cultures, or I should just say "about people", didn't come to a realization until I was like 23, no, 28, well, maybe until recently (not gonna mention my current age). The fact that I got out of my home, Japan, and came to USA helped me think about that, too. What those kids are taught is going to be something really precious in their life. Those birthday gifts brought by people for Glory are actually books that will be donated for kids also, requested by Glory. Those kids are blessed to have a teacher like Glory and Glory is blessed to have such beautiful kids. Happy Birthday Glory!
